"The legacy of Peter Cooper for the glue and gelatin business was that he developed the standard method of testing, and this had not been done prior to his involvement in the glue business. People had different methods of determining their glue just by how it was extracted. And they would simply say it was the first extraction or second extraction – it didn’t really have a test value, a quality value.
"Peter Cooper developed by determining the firmness of the glue when in a gelled state and he used different mechanisms to develop this test.
Peter Cooper used a Vernier scale to measure the firmness of glue.
"One of the earliest methods was a Vernier scale on a weight that measures the firmness of gelled material. He would market his glue based on the grade. And the uniqueness was that the customer got the same quality, the same grade, every time. Previously, this standard was not available. So he would sell his product through a variety of distributors. He sent a sign saying: Peter Cooper's World Standard Branded Glues for sale here. He also sold in the small boxes through Sears-Robucks."
